WHAT IS THREAD GUAGES; THREAD RING GAUGES AND THEIR USES

Thread gauges, which are also known as Thread pitch gauge, are used to measure thread pitch or its size. Every thread has valleys and peaks which are called crest and root. The thread may be tapered or straight. The thread gauges which are at an angle to the centerline are called Tapered thread while those which are straight, horizontally to the centerline ae called Parallel thread.

The function of the thread gauges is very simple; to measure the thread of the component. There are many types of thread gauges and thread ring gauges that can be used to measure different thread components. One of them is Leaf gauge. Leaf gauge’s calipers spread like wings giving the look of a leaf. It has varying sizes of measuring calipers which fits into the perfect mating thread showing the size and number of the subsequent thread.

Carry on until you find the perfect match. It can have a vast variety of the thread of any component like nuts and pipes, which is easy-to-handle.

Another type of gauge is the thread ring gauge. It is used to measure the male threads like nuts and screws. Thread ring gauges measure the external surface of the thread. Why thread ring gauges are better? This is because it measures the thread’s pitch along with the circumference of the component that cannot be done with other gauges; like leaf gauge. But one problem is that you need to carry different size thread ring gauges to measure the perfect pitch.

This is because some can be bigger than the ring’s circumference and some can be smaller than it. GO and NO-GO thread ring gauges are present as a simple ring gauge and GO gauge. The second one calculates the outer diameter of the thread and it should also move up till the entire length. If the case is not as described, then this object external diameter is not the qualified one.

The same goes for NO-GO thread ring gauges; the entire thread should not pass through this ring but if it does, then the external ring is not qualified.

One of the third types of thread gauges is plug gauge that is used to measure female threads such as nuts or ring-type tools. It measures the internal surface of the thread. It is double-sided due to the reason; if one side is not fitting in, you can replace it with the other side. Now it depends whether the plug gauge is a parallel one that has the same diameter throughout the entire length or tapered one which is thick above and thin diameter at the end.

Go/no go gauge is a type of thread gauge used to check the possibility of the thread being undersized or oversized. This thread gauge shows us the upper and the lower limit of the component. GO gauge shows the upper limit and goes till the end while the NO GO must go beyond three rounds.

Thread gauges are used widely in the manufacturing industries, automobile companies, and chemical industries. This tool is also used by the general population who are good at mechanics for the repair of cars, pipes in the restrooms, and much more. Thread ring gauges or simple gauges are also used for measurements at the construction site.
